Does the Bible address money issues of being in debt?
Yes, it does. In Proverbs 22:7 it says, “the borrower is servant to the lender.” KJV
Also, Psalm 37:21 “The wicked borrows, and pays not again but the righteous shows mercy, and gives”. KJV
Luke chapter 11 Jesus’ disciples ask him to teach them how to pray. Verse 2 through verse 4 of that chapter you will find, The Lord’s Prayer, where Jesus taught them to pray. Jesus included in that prayer “forgive everyone that is indebted to us.” KJV
Matthew 6:9 is also instruction on how the saved should pray. Verse 12 says “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Mark 11:25 “When you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.” KJV
NOTE: We will be forgiven as we forgive others. If we do not forgive others, we will not be forgiven. This speaks not just of money but all wrongs. Sometimes it is a hurtful deed, a word or unkindness, which needs to be forgiven. Notice in Luke 11:4 it says “SINS” Matthew 6:12 it says “debts”.
In the book of Mark chapter 12 verses13 through 17 the question of paying money to Caesar (taxes – government) was asked of Jesus “is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?… Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s”. KJV
In the book of Malachi chapter 3 verse 8 the question is asked “Will a man rob or defraud God?… In what way do we rob or defraud You? You have withheld your tithes and offerings…Verse 10 Bring all the tithes (the whole tenth of your income) into the storehouse (God’s House)…and prove Me now by it, says the Lord of host, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Amplified Bible
The prophet Haggai declares in chapter 1:5,6 & 7, “Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways and set your mind on what has come to you. You have sown much, but you have reaped little; you eat, but you do not have enough; you drink, but you do not have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages has earned them to put them in a bag with holes in it. Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways (previous and present conduct) and how you have fared.” Amplified Bible
