Church Dancinf

Curious Dancer

I visited a church where some people jumped up and down and some danced in place. In my home church I have never seen or heard of dancing as worship. Does the Bible speak about this?

Take a Bible trip:

The prophet Jeremiah talks about God regathering the nation of Israel in chapter 31:2-4 “The Lord says. . . I have loved you… I have drawn you…1 will build you up… Again, you will take up your tambourines and go out to dance with the joyful.” Drop down to verse 13. He says, “Then maidens will dance and be glad, young men and old as well.” NIV Bible

NOTE: the dance is in response for all that God has done for them. They dance to Praise God in thankfulness. Have you ever been so happy you had to jump or spin? Dancing in ancient times was a religious activity.

King David danced before the Lord when he brought the Ark of the Lord to Zion. Il Samuel chapter 6: 14 “And David danced before the Lord with all his might…” Amplified Bible

NOTE:  David was not dancing for his own pleasure or to out dance someone else. But to joyfully praise God for His goodness to him.

Psalm 149:3 “Let them (Zion’s children) praise His name in chorus and choir and with the [single or group] dance.” Psalm 150:4 “Praise Him with tambourine and [single or group] dance…” Amplified Bible

Exodus 15:20 “Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron [and Moses] took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels, dancing.” When the Israelites were brought out from the Red Sea, song was an expression of Praise to God for their victory. Amplified Bible

Psalm 30:10-12 “Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me; O LORD, be my help. You turned my wailing into dancing… and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever.” NIV Bible

NOTE: Scientifically, it has been proven that a dance reduces stress, and causes the brain to release dopamine, a natural mood booster with endorphins that is a natural painkiller. The exercise of dancing can help relax you.

I have read dancing activates multiple brain regions responsible for problem solving, coordination and emotions. Combining physical and mental activities will benefit you through dancing.

It has been said that dancers have found the fountain of youth.

I love to dance for the Lord in praise, thanksgiving and worship. I am however careful to be sure my dance brings praise to God and not lust to men or shame to me. Who is the dance for? To please God or Man?
