Angels in Heaven

About Angels

Statues of Angels

I would like to know more about angels.

Can you help me understand what the Bible says about them?

Angels are mentioned about one hundred and eight times in the Old Testament and a hundred and sixty-five times in the New Testament. The word angel means messenger of God. Angels are a distinct order of creation and have been given a heavenly position, above the sphere of man, Psalm 8:4&5.  People do not become angels when they die. Yet man will be like the angels, a spirit being, and there will no longer be death.  Matthew 22:30.

Angels are usually spoken of in the male gender, although they have no sex. Angels are innumerable, having different roles, even elect (chosen) angels. I Timothy 5:21. Angels serving God are witnesses and spectators of what is happening here on earth. Psalm 103:20; Luke 12:8,9. They are not to be worshipped, Revelation 22:8&9.

Halley’s Bible Handbook states, “Occasionally the word “Angel” seems to refer to the inanimate forces of nature. But, generally, it unmistakably means, PERSONALITIES OF THE UNSEEN WORLD.”  And of the angels he says, “Who makes his angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire?” Hebrews 1:7 KJV

There are fallen angels who are Satan’s helpers in his evil efforts and will share in Satan’s doom. Jude 1:6; There are angels that are chained and some who roam free, looking to work evil. II Peter 2:4 “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment.” KJV

Archangel Michael Slaying Satan

The free ones are known as demons or devils and are seeking entrance into the bodies of earth. Mark 5:8-13, Luke 11:24-26

Ephesesians 6:10-18 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the cunning devices of the devil. For we wrestle not against the flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in places of authority. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand…”

“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness. And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all taking the shield of faith wherein you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…” KJV

Revelations 14:6-11 The messages of angels give warning to all people you may read it for yourself. Verse 12 says, “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that kept the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Verse 13 “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.” KJV

NOTE: Genesis 18:3 Three angels visit Abraham and appear to him as men. One of the men tells Abraham that Sarah will have a child. The fact that Abraham calls him LORD, he was aware he was God. You may find interesting to read a book, still available, Angel Unaware by Dale Evans Rogers with her views of angels.
