A woman’s covering – what is it? The hair, scarf, veil, a hat or what?
I want my response to offer a much deeper meaning than something that is visible. I believe it is important to cover our bodies with respectable and discrete clothing that is suitable to the styles and customs of the time (day) that’s current. A boy/male should look like a man and a girl/female should look like a woman.
Take a Bible trip:
I Corinthians 11:3 “But I want you to know and realize that Christ is the Head of every man, the head of a woman is her husband, and the Head of Christ is God.” Amplified Bible
I Corinthians 11:6 “For if a woman will not wear (a head) covering, then she should cut off her hair too; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her head shorn or shaven, let her cover (her head).” Amplified Bible
I Peter 3:3&4, 6… “Let not yours be the (merely) external adorning with {elaborate}interweaving and knotting of the hair, the wearing of jewelry, or changes of clothes;4 but let it be the inward adorning and beauty of the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit…which is very precious in the sight of God.”
6, “It was thus that Sarah obeyed Abraham [following his guidance and acknowledging his headship over her by] calling him lord (master, leader, authority).” Amplified Bible
I Timothy 2 :9 & 10 “Also [I desire] that women should adorn themselves modestly and appropriately and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with [elaborate] hair arrangement or gold or pearls or expensive clothing,” Amplified Bible
Informational Note:
Paul wrote these letters to the Corinthian church for instruction and counsel requested by them, concerning many issues, the covering of a woman was just one he addressed, as did Peter. These men were complete in the fact that men also have a covering, God. Both men and women are subject to a covering of authority. Verse 12 of I Corinthians 11 says “For as woman was made from man, even so man is also born of woman; and all [whether male or female go forth] from God [as their Author].” Amplified Bible
What I understand from these scriptures is a woman’s covering is her outward appearance and attitude revealing the inner person of who she is. Showing forward her attitude and subjection to her husband and her God which are her coverings. These coverings are for her safety and protection, as being under the arm or wing of God’s authority.
I like the way the Living Bible interprets I Timothy 2:8-10 “Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty that depends on jewelry or beautiful clothes, or hair arrangement. Be beautiful inside, in your hearts, with the lasting charm of a gentle and quite spirit which is so precious to God. That kind of deep beauty was seen in the saintly women of old, who trusted God and fitted in with their husband’s plans.”
I Samuel 16:7 “…For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart”.
I think first impressions matter, how we perceive ourselves shows personal respect and reverence for the life we live.
P.S. Women who made themselves available to men for pleasure, had their heads shaven (no hair). If they wanted to pray or go to the house of the Lord God, they were required to cover their head with a scarf or veil, for God will not look upon sin and shame. To not cover their bald head would be disgraceful to God.
